When should surgery be done, and who are the right candidates for surgery?

  • Cleft lip is formed in the top of the lip as either a small gap or an indentation in the lip. It is a congenital disability or (a defect that comes with birth).
  • Patients with the deformity might have impaired nasal airflow. These patients have septal deflections, atretic nostrils, turbinate hypertrophy. All these can be corrected with surgery.

Procedure

  • The first step is, as always, to administer a local or general anaesthetic or sedative, as per patient’s wishes.
  • There is no minimum age for surgery candidates, but a patient should be allowed to develop full psychological maturity before being operated.
  • The first aim is to establish a functional nasal airway in addition to improving cosmesis.
  • There are different techniques available for surgery, but our surgeons take special conditions into consideration before the operation.
