When should surgery be done, and who are the right candidates for surgery?
- Cleft lip is formed in the top of the lip as either a small gap or an indentation in the lip. It is a congenital disability or (a defect that comes with birth).
- Patients with the deformity might have impaired nasal airflow. These patients have septal deflections, atretic nostrils, turbinate hypertrophy. All these can be corrected with surgery.
Procedure
- The first step is, as always, to administer a local or general anaesthetic or sedative, as per patient’s wishes.
- There is no minimum age for surgery candidates, but a patient should be allowed to develop full psychological maturity before being operated.
- The first aim is to establish a functional nasal airway in addition to improving cosmesis.

Recovery/ Potential Risks
- The nose may be covered with gel tapes for 1 or 2 weeks.
- Swelling can occur, but it resolves after a week.
- There might be some pain and discomfort for the first week.
